Early Childhood Staff Development

Staff Development for Teachers of 3, 4 and 5 Year Olds: Thematic Instruction and Developmentally Appropriate Practices

Corn Associates has developed a 4 day, 20 hour, professional development program for teachers of three, four and five year old children, with regular follow-up workshops throughout the year. Based on our soon to be released publication, Teaching 3, 4 and 5 Year Olds: A Conceptual Model for Organizing Early Childhood Programs, teachers are provided with an articulated curriculum consisting of weekly themes tied to the core standards. Included, are related children's books, songs, finger plays and poems, also related to themes. The teachers also practice a curriculum development process built around literature and active learning techniques.

For more information about our annual in-service programs, visit our Professional Development Programs page.

Parent Education

School districts who contract with Corn Associates may choose to include three additional evening sessions for parents. These sessions include a simple explanation of the state standards and how the teachers are receiving in-service training. Parent education topics include:

  • "How to Help Your Child Do Better In School"
  • "Understanding Children's Temperaments: Shy, Easy and Difficult"
  • "Building Your Child's Self-Esteem."
