They will present a specialized series of three workshops focusing on preparing educators for learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder.


Topics in the program include:

• The Medical Perspective: Approach of medical professionals in early diagnosis of the autistic child, working with parents, schools, and child study teams.
• Understanding the Spectrum of Autism: Advances in medical diagnosis and treatment.
• In New Jersey's Public Schools: Current district programming practices for autistic students.
• Inclusion: What basic considerations are needed prior to inclusion?  How to address the concerns of parents, students, teachers, and classmates.
• Initial IEP Development: Parental involvement and considerations for placement at primary, intermediate, and secondary education levels.
• Best Practices: Public school program developments for the autistic student in Bergen County, in New Jersey, and across the nation that could influence your district.
• In Private Schools: Establishing the placement process, IEP, instruction plans, monitoring issues, and the case manager's role.
• Understanding the Concerns of Parents: Coordinating efforts in the home and in the school.
• Research Review: Current research on educational programming for children with autism.
• Putting Research into Practice: Education intervention strategies for learners with autism.
